In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Kaf. Ha. Ya. Ain. Sad. (1) This is an account of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zechariah (2) When he softly prayed to his Lord. (3) saying, 'O my Lord, behold the bones within me are feeble and my head is all aflame with hoariness. And in calling on Thee, my Lord, I have never been hitherto unprosperous. (4) And now I fear my kinsfolk after I am gone; and my wife is barren. So give me, from Thee, a kinsman (5) “He being my successor and the heir of the Descendants of Yaqub (Jacob); and my Lord, make him a cherished* one.” (* Make him a Prophet among the Descendants of Israel.) (6) “O Zakaria! We give you the glad tidings of a son whose name is Yahya (John) before him, We have not created anyone of this name.” (7) "How can I have a son, O Lord" he said, "when my wife is barren and I am old and decrepit?" (8) He replied: 'It shall be so; your Lord says: "It is easy for Me, indeed, I created you before time when you were not a thing." (9) He said: My Lord! Appoint for me some token. He said: Thy token is that thou, with no bodily defect, shalt not speak unto mankind three nights. (10) So Zakariya came out to his people from him chamber: He told them by signs to celebrate Allah's praises in the morning and in the evening. (11) [And when the son was born and grew up, he was told,] "O John! Hold fast unto the divine writ with [all thy] strength!" - for We granted him wisdom while he was yet a little boy, (12) And compassion from Ourselves, and chastity; and he was extremely pious. (13) And kind to his parents, and he was not overbearing or rebellious. (14) And peace be upon him the day he was born and the day he dies and the day he is raised alive. (15)
