Kaf. Ha'. Ya'. Ayn. Sad. (1) (This is) a mention of the mercy of your Lord to His slave Zakariya (Zachariah). (2) Behold! he cried to his Lord in secret, (3) Praying: "O my Lord! infirm indeed are my bones, and the hair of my head doth glisten with grey: but never am I unblest, O my Lord, in my prayer to Thee! (4) "Now I fear (what) my relatives (and colleagues) (will do) after me: but my wife is barren: so give me an heir as from Thyself,- (5) who will be my heir and an heir to the House of Jacob, and make him, my Lord, satisfied' (6) [Thereupon the angels called out unto him: "O Zachariah! We bring thee the glad tiding of [the birth of] a son whose name shall be John. [And God says,] "Never have We given this name to anyone before him." (7) He said: O my Lord! when shall I have a son, and my wife is barren, and I myself have reached indeed the extreme degree of old age? (8) (The angel) answered: "Thus will it be. Your Lord said: 'This is easy for Me; for when I brought you into being you were nothing.' (9) Zachariah asked, " Lord, show me evidence (if this is a heavenly news)." The Lord said, "The evidence for it is that you must not speak (to any mortal) though you are in good health for three nights (and days)." (10) Thereupon Zechariah came out from the sanctuary and directed his people by gestures to extol His glory by day and by night. (11) "O John! Hold the Book with all your strength." We had bestowed wisdom upon him while he was still a child; (12) And (made him) sympathetic to men as a mercy (or a grant) from Us, and pure from sins [i.e. Yahya (John)] and he was righteous, (13) and cherishing his parents, not arrogant, rebellious. (14) And peace is upon him the day he was born, and the day he will taste death, and the day he will be raised alive. (15)
