98 verses, revealed in Mecca after Initiator (Faater) before T H (Taa Haa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
KaafHaYa'aeenSaad. (1) This is the story of the blessing of your Lord to His servant Zachariah. (2) When he softly prayed to his Lord. (3) "Lord, my bones have weakened and my head has turned hoary with age, but never, Lord, have I been disappointed in my prayer to you: (4) “And I fear my relatives after me and my wife is barren therefore bestow upon me from Yourself one who will take up my work.” (5) “He being my successor and the heir of the Descendants of Yaqub (Jacob); and my Lord, make him a cherished* one.” (* Make him a Prophet among the Descendants of Israel.) (6) (His prayer was answered): "O Zakariya! We give thee good news of a son: His name shall be Yahya: on none by that name have We conferred distinction before." (7) [Zachariah] exclaimed: "O my Sustainer! How can I have a son when my wife has always been barren and I have become utterly infirm through old age?" (8) (The angel) answered: "Thus will it be. Your Lord said: 'This is easy for Me; for when I brought you into being you were nothing.' (9) Zechariah said: "Lord, grant me a Sign." Said He: "Your Sign is that you shall not be able to speak to people for three nights, though you will be otherwise sound." (10) Then Zachariah came forth from the shrine to his people and told them by signs to glorify the Lord morning and evening. (11) O Yahya! take hold of the Book with strength, and We granted him wisdom while yet a child (12) And (made him) sympathetic to men as a mercy (or a grant) from Us, and pure from sins [i.e. Yahya (John)] and he was righteous, (13) And kind to his parents, neither arrogant nor disobedient. (14) So peace on him the day he was born, the day he will die, and the day that he will be raised from the dead. (15)
