In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Kaf. Ha. Ya. Ain. Sad. (1) AN ACCOUNT of the grace which thy Sustainer bestowed upon His servant Zachariah: (2) When he called to his Lord inwardly, (3) and said, "My Lord, my bones have become feeble and my hair has turned white with age. Yet I have never been deprived in receiving from You the answer to my prayers. (4) now I fear my kinsmen when I am gone. [I have no hope of their continuing my mission] for my wife is barren, so grant me a successor from Yourself, (5) Who will be heir to me, and heir to the house of Jacob; and make him obedient to You, O Lord." (6) (He was told): "Zechariah, We bring you the good news of the birth of a son whose name shall be Yahya (John), one whose namesake We never created before." (7) He submitted, “My Lord how can I have a son whereas my wife is barren and I have reached infirmity due to old age?” (8) He said: "So (it will be). Your Lord says; It is easy for Me. Certainly I have created you before, when you had been nothing!" (9) Zechariah said: "Lord, grant me a Sign." Said He: "Your Sign is that you shall not be able to speak to people for three nights, though you will be otherwise sound." (10) Zachariah came out to his people from place of worship and inspired them to glorify the Lord both in the morning and evening. (11) (It was said to his son): "O Yahya (John)! Hold fast the Scripture [the Taurat (Torah)]." And We gave him wisdom while yet a child. (12) And compassion from Us, and goodness. So he was devout, (13) And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant. (14) 'Peace be upon him, the day he was born, and the day he dies, and the day he is raised up alive!' (15)
