In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Kaf- Ha-Ya-'Ain-Sad. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. (1) AN ACCOUNT of the grace which thy Sustainer bestowed upon His servant Zachariah: (2) when he called upon his Lord in low tones, saying, (3) he prayed: "O my Sustainer! Feeble have become my bones, and my head glistens with grey hair. But never yet, O my Lord, has my prayer unto Thee remained unanswered. (4) "Now I fear (what) my relatives (and colleagues) (will do) after me: but my wife is barren: so give me an heir as from Thyself,- (5) Who will inherit me and inherit from the family of Jacob. And make him, my Lord, pleasing [to You]." (6) (His prayer was answered): "O Zakariya! We give thee good news of a son: His name shall be Yahya: on none by that name have We conferred distinction before." (7) He said: O my Lord! in what wise shall there be for me a boy, whereas my wife hath been barren, and surely have reached an age of extreme degree? (8) He said: So shall it be, your Lord says: It is easy to Me, and indeed I created you before, when you were nothing. (9) He said: my Lord appoint for me a sign. Allah said: thy sign is that thou shalt not speak unto mankind for three nights, while sound. (10) So he came forth unto his people from the Sanctuary, then he made signal to them, 'Give you glory at dawn and evening.' (11) (We said:) "O John, hold fast to the Book;" and We gave him wisdom right from boyhood, (12) And tenderness from Us and purity, and he was one who guarded (against evil), (13) And dutiful towards his parents, and he was neither an arrogant nor disobedient (to Allah or to his parents). (14) And peace be upon him the day he was born and the day he dies and the day he is raised alive. (15)
