In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Kaf-Ha-Ya-A’in-Sad. (* Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah and to whomever He reveals know their precise meanings.) (1) (This is) a recital of the Mercy of thy Lord to His servant Zakariya. (2) When he softly prayed to his Lord. (3) And said: "O my Lord, my bones decay, my head is white and hoary, yet in calling You, O Lord, I have never been deprived. (4) Indeed, I fear my kinsmen who will succeed me, for my wife is barren. Grant me a kinsman (5) “He being my successor and the heir of the Descendants of Yaqub (Jacob); and my Lord, make him a cherished* one.” (* Make him a Prophet among the Descendants of Israel.) (6) [Thereupon the angels called out unto him: "O Zachariah! We bring thee the glad tiding of [the birth of] a son whose name shall be John. [And God says,] "Never have We given this name to anyone before him." (7) He said, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when my wife has been barren and I have reached extreme old age?" (8) He (the angel) said, “So it is; your Lord says, ‘This is easy for Me in fact I created you before this, at a time when you did not exist.’” (9) [Zakariya (Zachariah)] said: "My Lord! Appoint for me a sign." He said: "Your sign is that you shall not speak unto mankind for three nights, though having no bodily defect." (10) So Zakariya came out to his people from him chamber: He told them by signs to celebrate Allah's praises in the morning and in the evening. (11) O Yahya! hold fast the book. And We vouchsafed unto him wisdom, while yet a child. (12) and tenderness from Us and purity, and he was cautious; (13) and full of piety towards his parents; and never was he haughty or rebellious. (14) Peace be on him on the day of his birth, and on the day of his death, and peace will be on him on the day he is raised up to life again. (15)
