In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Kaf-Ha-Ya-A’in-Sad. (* Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah and to whomever He reveals know their precise meanings.) (1) (This is) a mention of the mercy of your Lord to His slave Zakariya (Zachariah). (2) when he called upon his Lord secretly (3) "Lord, my bones have weakened and my head has turned hoary with age, but never, Lord, have I been disappointed in my prayer to you: (4) “And I fear my relatives after me and my wife is barren therefore bestow upon me from Yourself one who will take up my work.” (5) Who should inherit me and inherit from the children of Yaqoub, and make him, my Lord, one in whom Thou art well pleased. (6) (He was told): "Zechariah, We bring you the good news of the birth of a son whose name shall be Yahya (John), one whose namesake We never created before." (7) He said: My Lord! How can I have a son when my wife is barren and I have reached infirm old age? (8) He replied: 'It shall be so; your Lord says: "It is easy for Me, indeed, I created you before time when you were not a thing." (9) Zechariah said: "Lord, grant me a Sign." Said He: "Your Sign is that you shall not be able to speak to people for three nights, though you will be otherwise sound." (10) Zachariah came out to his people from place of worship and inspired them to glorify the Lord both in the morning and evening. (11) (It was said to his son): "O Yahya (John)! Hold fast the Scripture [the Taurat (Torah)]." And We gave him wisdom while yet a child. (12) And affection from Us and purity, and he was fearing of Allah (13) and cherishing to his parents. Never was he insolent or rebellious. (14) And peace be upon him the day he was born and the day he dies and the day he is raised alive. (15)
