In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Kaf Ha Ya 'Ayn Sad. (1) This is an account of your Lord's mercy bestowed upon His servant Zachariah, (2) When he called out to his Sustainer in the secrecy of his heart, (3) saying, 'O my Lord, behold the bones within me are feeble and my head is all aflame with hoariness. And in calling on Thee, my Lord, I have never been hitherto unprosperous. (4) And now I fear my kinsfolk after I am gone; and my wife is barren. So give me, from Thee, a kinsman (5) "(One that) will (truly) represent me, and represent the posterity of Jacob; and make him, O my Lord! one with whom Thou art well-pleased!" (6) "Zachariah, We bring you good news of a son whose name shall be John. We have not given such a name to anyone before." (7) He said: "O my Lord! How shall I have a son, when my wife is barren and I have grown quite decrepit from old age?" (8) (The angel) said, "This is true, but your Lord says, 'For Me it is easy; I created you when you did not exist". (9) He said: "O Lord, give me a token." "Though sound," He answered, "you will not talk to any one for three nights running." (10) Then he came forth unto his people from the sanctuary, and signified to them: Glorify your Lord at break of day and fall of night. (11) To John We said, "Hold fast the Book," and while he was still a child, We bestowed upon him wisdom, (12) And compassion from Ourselves, and chastity; and he was extremely pious. (13) and cherishing to his parents. Never was he insolent or rebellious. (14) 'Peace be upon him, the day he was born, and the day he dies, and the day he is raised up alive!' (15)
