The Cave (Al-Kahf)
110 verses, revealed in Mecca after Overwhelming (Al-Ghaasheyah) before The Bee (Al-nahl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Praise be to God. He has sent the Book to His servant and has made it a flawless guide (for human beings) (1) (He hath made it) Straight (and Clear) in order that He may warn (the godless) of a terrible Punishment from Him, and that He may give Glad Tidings to the Believers who work righteous deeds, that they shall have a goodly Reward, (2) wherein they shall abide for ever; (3) And to warn those who say, "God has taken to Himself a son." (4) No knowledge have they of such a thing, nor had their fathers. Mighty is the word that comes out of their mouths [i.e. He begot (took) sons and daughters]. They utter nothing but a lie. (5) Yet perchance, if they do not believe in this tiding, you will consume yourself with grief and follow after them. (6) Behold, We have willed that all beauty on earth be a means by which We put men to a test, [showing] which of them are best in conduct; (7) And most surely We will make what is on it bare ground without herbage. (8) Do you think that the people of the Cave and the Inscription were one of Our wondrous signs? (9) (Remember) when the young men fled for refuge (from their disbelieving folk) to the Cave, they said: "Our Lord! Bestow on us mercy from Yourself, and facilitate for us our affair in the right way!" (10) We lulled them to sleep in that cave for a number of years (11) Then roused them to ascertain which of the two groups could account for the period they had stayed. (12)
