The Cave (Al-Kahf)
110 verses, revealed in Mecca after Overwhelming (Al-Ghaasheyah) before The Bee (Al-nahl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Praise be to God. He has sent the Book to His servant and has made it a flawless guide (for human beings) (1) [a divine writ] unerringly straight, meant to warn [the godless] of a severe punishment from Him, and to give unto the believers who do good works the glad tiding that theirs shall be a goodly reward (2) and they will live for ever therein. (3) And to warn those (Jews, Christians, and pagans) who say, "Allah has begotten a son (or offspring or children)." (4) Neither they nor their fathers had any knowledge of such utterance (that God has begotten a son). Whatever they say about (this matter) is vicious blasphemy and plain lies. (5) Then perhaps you would kill yourself through grief over them, [O Muhammad], if they do not believe in this message, [and] out of sorrow. (6) We have caused earthly things to seem attractive so that We can see who will excel in good deeds. (7) And verily! We shall make all that is on it (the earth) a bare dry soil (without any vegetation or trees, etc.). (8) Or, do you think that the Fellows of the Cave and the Inscription were of Our wonderful signs? (9) When the youths sought refuge in the Cave, they said: 'Lord give us from Your Mercy and furnish us with rectitude in our affair' (10) We sealed their ears in the cave for a number of years. (11) And afterward We raised them up that We might know which of the two parties would best calculate the time that they had tarried. (12)
