The Cave (Al-Kahf)
110 verses, revealed in Mecca after Overwhelming (Al-Ghaasheyah) before The Bee (Al-nahl)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
ALL PRAISE is due to God, who has bestowed this divine writ from on high upon His servant, and has not allowed any deviousness to obscure its meaning: (1) Rightly directing, that he might give warning of severe punishment from Him and give good news to the believers who do good that they shall have a goodly reward, (2) and they will live for ever therein. (3) And to warn those who say “Allah has chosen a child.” (4) They have no knowledge of this, as their fathers did not have. How terrible are the words they utter! They speak nothing but lies. (5) But wouldst thou, perhaps, torment thyself to death with grief over them if they are not willing to believe in this message? (6) Behold, We have willed that all beauty on earth be a means by which We put men to a test, [showing] which of them are best in conduct; (7) And most surely We will make what is on it bare ground without herbage. (8) Do you think the men of the cave and Ar-Raqim were so strange among Our signs? (9) (Remember) when the young men fled for refuge (from their disbelieving folk) to the Cave, they said: "Our Lord! Bestow on us mercy from Yourself, and facilitate for us our affair in the right way!" (10) We then thumped upon their ears in the Cave for a number of years. (* Put them to sleep.) (11) Then We roused them, in order to test which of the two parties was best at calculating the term of years they had tarried! (12)
