The Cave (Al-Kahf)
110 verses, revealed in Mecca after Overwhelming (Al-Ghaasheyah) before The Bee (Al-nahl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
ALL PRAISE is due to God, who has bestowed this divine writ from on high upon His servant, and has not allowed any deviousness to obscure its meaning: (1) (He hath made it) Straight (and Clear) in order that He may warn (the godless) of a terrible Punishment from Him, and that He may give Glad Tidings to the Believers who work righteous deeds, that they shall have a goodly Reward, (2) Wherein they will abide for ever; (3) Further, that He may warn those (also) who say, "Allah hath begotten a son": (4) They have no knowledge of this, nor did their forefathers have any either. What they say is monstrous: they are merely uttering falsehoods! (5) Possibly you may risk your life by grieving (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him) for them if they do not believe in this narration. (6) That which is on earth we have made but as a glittering show for the earth, in order that We may test them - as to which of them are best in conduct. (7) but We shall reduce all this to barren waste. (8) Or dost thou reflect that the Companions of the Cave and of the Inscription were wonders among Our Sign? (9) Behold, the youths betook themselves to the Cave: they said, "Our Lord! bestow on us Mercy from Thyself, and dispose of our affair for us in the right way!" (10) We sealed off their ears in the cave for a number of years, (11) Then roused them to ascertain which of the two groups could account for the period they had stayed. (12)
