The Cave (Al-Kahf)
110 verses, revealed in Mecca after Overwhelming (Al-Ghaasheyah) before The Bee (Al-nahl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Praise belongs to Allah who has sent down the Book to His worshiper (Prophet Muhammad) and has not made any crookedness in it, (1) [a divine writ] unerringly straight, meant to warn [the godless] of a severe punishment from Him, and to give unto the believers who do good works the glad tiding that theirs shall be a goodly reward (2) and they will live for ever therein. (3) And to warn those who say “Allah has chosen a child.” (4) No knowledge whatever have they of Him, and neither had their forefathers: dreadful - is this saying that comes out of their mouths, [and] nothing but falsehood do they utter! (5) Then perhaps you would kill yourself through grief over them, [O Muhammad], if they do not believe in this message, [and] out of sorrow. (6) That which is on earth we have made but as a glittering show for the earth, in order that We may test them - as to which of them are best in conduct. (7) For We shall certainly turn it to barren dust. (8) Do you not think that the story of the Companions of the Cave and the Inscription was one of Our marvelous miracles? (9) When the youths sought refuge in the cave, they said: Our Lord! grant us mercy from Thee, and provide for us a right course in our affair. (10) So We cast [a cover of sleep] over their ears within the cave for a number of years. (11) Then roused them to ascertain which of the two groups could account for the period they had stayed. (12)
