The Cave (Al-Kahf)
110 verses, revealed in Mecca after Overwhelming (Al-Ghaasheyah) before The Bee (Al-nahl)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
All the praises and thanks be to Allah, Who has sent down to His slave (Muhammad SAW) the Book (the Quran), and has not placed therein any crookedness. (1) [a divine writ] unerringly straight, meant to warn [the godless] of a severe punishment from Him, and to give unto the believers who do good works the glad tiding that theirs shall be a goodly reward (2) In which they will abide forever. (3) Furthermore, [this divine writ is meant] to warn all those who assert, "God has taken unto Himself a son." (4) No knowledge have they of such a thing, nor had their fathers. Mighty is the word that comes out of their mouths [i.e. He begot (took) sons and daughters]. They utter nothing but a lie. (5) Perhaps, you, would kill yourself (O Muhammad SAW) in grief, over their footsteps (for their turning away from you), because they believe not in this narration (the Quran). (6) We have appointed all that is on the earth for an adornment for it, and that We may try which of them is fairest in works; (7) and, verily, [in time] We shall reduce all that is on it to barren dust! (8) Or, do you think that the Fellows of the Cave and the Inscription were of Our wonderful signs? (9) (Remember) when the young men fled for refuge (from their disbelieving folk) to the Cave, they said: "Our Lord! Bestow on us mercy from Yourself, and facilitate for us our affair in the right way!" (10) We then thumped upon their ears in the Cave for a number of years. (* Put them to sleep.) (11) We then awakened them to see which of the two groups more accurately tells the period they had stayed. (12)
